5a, Quiz: Defining your site using the Advanced Tab,
which gets you ready for uploading your website, before starting
Lesson 10:
Registering your Domain Name
and Acquiring a Hosting Package
You can find any number of Domain Name Registrants and Web Hosts
by searching on Google. They will help you register your name and host your
site for you.
I was recommended Easily.co.uk
by a friend.
You can buy your domain name and hosting account together at the same time,
or separately, at different times
1 First you choose your domain name (the name for your website),
and whether its extension is available too, eg. .co.uk.,
.com, .org, .eu, .net, etc. So, use the search on Easily or whichever
host you have chosen.
2 Then you choose a Registration period, the number of years
you want to buy registration for.
Compare the Hosting Plans before you buy.
I bought an Easily Virtual Account: Standard as it gave me
100MB Initial Web Space; allowed me to make DreamWeaver pages, and was Search
Engine Compatible. It is situated on an Apache Web-Server, somewhere in Borough
High Street, Southwark, London. I share this server with countless other clients
of Easily.co.uk. It is a shared server.
My site is 36MB in size at present.
3 Website hosting for 1 year £29.79
+ VAT
This is for Standard Virtual (Linux) hosting, with 5GB minimum initial purchase
data transfer.
Data transfer is the amount of information
sent through the internet when your website files are uploaded and downloaded.
My Data transfer is 4.8 GB, so I expect to have to pay for some extra quite
soon.
You can monitor how much you are using through the Control Panel, and the
host sends you an email if you are running low, so that you can buy more.
You can also buy email accounts.
4 If you accept the price and the deal, then Add to Basket.
See the Full Total and Make Purchase.
5 When you have bought your Domain Name Registration, a
confirmation letter will be posted to you from Nominet, the UK internet
names (not for profit) organisation telling you how long your name is registered
for, and where you can amend your details if you need to, and how to download
a certificate.
6 When you have bought your Hosting Package an email will come from your host stating:
a) it is active
b) you can use File Transfer Protocol and Dreamweaver to upload now
c) you will not see your site on the internet for 24 hours
d) not to delete any pre-installed files placed there by the Host
e) to make sure your index page is titled index.html so that it will overwrite theirs when uploaded.
f) to avoid uppercase letters or spaces in filenames
g) to set your FTP client to passive mode (PASV)and your "login-type" to normal (not Anonymous)
h) to COPY & PASTE your logins
from this email into to FTP dialogue box in Dreamweaver, ie.
